The theme of loneliness and desilusion in katherine mansfields novel miss brill

An attractive woman went past, dropping her flowers. She sits alone on a bench with her ratty old fur and watches the world pass before her. This habit fills the whole Sunday and the act of going to the park, where she is amoung other people, makes her feel that she is not alone maybe that she is even part of their lives.

We can assume that she is relating the people to her, while she imagines the young characters to in a scene of a play. And as the band struck up a playful tune, Miss Brill wanted to sing aloud, believing that when she did all of the people around her would join in.

Every Sunday she puts on her fur, goes to the park, listens to the band, watches the people, goes to the bakery and buys a piece of honey- cake.

Never mind, there was always the crowd to watch. And yet it explained why she made such a point of starting from home at just the same time each week - so as not to be late for the performance - and it also explained why she had quite a queer, shy feeling at telling her English pupils how she spent her Sunday afternoons.

Miss Brill has made an ever so passionate attempt to express love, to be a part of the whole of society that means so much to her. And sometimes a tiny staggerer came suddenly rocking into the open from under the trees, stopped, stared, as suddenly sat down "flop," until its small high-stepping mother, like a young hen, rushed scolding to its rescue.

She was on the stage. The band seemed to sense her mood and played more softly. The emotions she feels are not real and dear to her, but performs them as if they are. Other people sat on the benches and green chairs, but they were nearly always the same, Sunday after Sunday, and - Miss Brill had often noticed - there was something funny about nearly all of them.
